Being treated differently by strangers, and hating it

Being treated differently by strangers, and hating it — putting it in its own thread so it does not get lost in the check-in.

I have been sitting on this for a month.

What I would find useful is knowing whether anybody else has felt this way about it, because from inside my own head it seems like an unreasonable reaction.

I am not in crisis and I do not want anybody worried. I am flat, and I have been flat for longer than I would like, and I am naming it here first.

No advice needed. Company would be welcome and anything else is a bonus.

What surprised me was that the difficult feelings did not follow the timeline I expected. My hardest month was much later than I would have predicted.

Gently: you have apologised twice in a post where you have done nothing that requires an apology.

The thing that has helped most is spending time doing things where my body is useful rather than looked at. Swimming, mostly, badly.

Picking up Tibor’s point rather than starting a new one.

I would gently say that if this has become the main thing you think about, that is worth mentioning to somebody rather than managing alone.

Reading this at half past six with a cup of tea and nodding at every line.

My therapist pointed out that I was describing my body in the third person, and I had genuinely not noticed I was doing it.

Somebody in this circle wrote that a body is a place to live rather than a thing to display, and I have thought about that most weeks since.

What I got wrong was expecting a change in circumstances to change how I felt. It did not. The feeling had its own history.

Nissa, thank you for that. It gives me somewhere to start from.

The comparison habit was the hardest to break and I broke it mostly by removing the things I was comparing against.

Nothing here is medical advice and nothing here is therapy. If this is taking up most of your attention, please do speak to somebody qualified.

I had assumed this would resolve itself and it did not. It needed actual attention, and in my case some therapy, and I resisted both for a year.

Something that helped was reducing how much I looked. Not as a punishment. Just less often, and it made the looking less loaded.

Speaking plainly: if things have got dark, this is a thread to leave and a person to ring. We are company and we are not the right help for that.

Quietly agreeing from the other side of the country.
