How to survive a work trip in week five — putting it in its own thread so it does not get lost in the check-in.

I have been reading here for a few weeks and have not posted, so this is me posting.

I nearly did not post this because it feels like a small thing to be stuck on. It has taken up most of my thinking for a month, so apparently it is not small to me.

Here is where I actually am. The medicine side has been more or less as described; the part nobody prepared me for is everything around it — what to say to people, how to plan a week, and how to tell an ordinary stage from one worth raising.

To put the figure in the title beside the rest of it: five. That is the whole of the arithmetic and none of it is an estimate.

Sorry for the length. If anybody has been at this point, I would very much like to hear how it went.

My week six was much harder than my week two, which I had not expected at all. I had assumed it got monotonically easier and it does not always go in that direction.

Something that helped me through the middle stretch: I stopped judging a week by the last day of it. Fridays were always the worst read on how the week had actually gone.

Gently noting that we have three people offering different schedules and none of us is prescribing. Descriptions of what happened to you are welcome; instructions are not.

I would gently say that twelve weeks is not long. It felt endless from inside it and looks very short from here, and both of those readings are honest.

Esi — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

The first twelve weeks are also when you find out what your prescriber is like when you ask a question between appointments. Mine was much more available than I expected and I had spent weeks not asking.

I have read this twice now. Thank you for writing it.

Weeks one to twelve for me were: strange, quiet, difficult, difficult, better, fine, fine, tired, tired, fine, good, and then a week where I forgot I was doing it at all.

Reading Blue, I recognised more of that than I expected to.

I found the second month harder than the first because the novelty had worn off and it had turned into something I had to keep doing. That is a very ordinary shape.

If you are in the middle of this stretch and everything feels unresolved, that is the correct feeling for the middle of it. Nothing is meant to be resolved yet.

What Tavish described happened to me too, in a slightly different order.

What changed for me around week ten was less physical than practical. I finally had a routine that fit my actual week rather than the week I wished I had.

A small thing that made the whole stretch easier: I set one calendar reminder for the day before, not the day itself. Being reminded on the day was always slightly too late to be useful.

Ondine said something I want to sit with for a second.

The bit I underestimated was how much of the first twelve weeks is logistics — collections, dates, where things live, who knows. The physical side took up much less of my attention than the arrangements did.

Nuala — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

I want to say plainly that my first twelve weeks contained one week I would describe as bad. One. The other eleven were somewhere between uneventful and quietly encouraging.

I read this twice. The second time was for the last paragraph.

I asked here in week five whether I should be further along, and somebody replied asking further along than what. I did not have an answer, and that was the answer.

The weekly rhythm of this circle carried me through the first twelve weeks more than any single piece of information did. Turning up on a Thursday to say a small thing was enough.

Do not compare your week seven to somebody else's week seven. I did that for about a month and it cost me a fortnight of unnecessary worry.

Bramley has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

Twelve weeks in I finally understood that the steep part is the learning, not the medicine. Once I knew how my own week worked, everything got quieter.

I had two completely uneventful weeks in the middle of this stretch and I found them oddly hard, because I had nothing to report and felt as though I should have.

I want to slow this down a little. There are four different accounts of the same stage in this thread and they are all somebody's real experience, which makes them true and not necessarily relevant to the person who asked.

Halfway through I stopped reading anything outside this site and my own prescriber's advice, and my anxiety dropped noticeably within a fortnight. That was my single biggest change.
