A question rather than an update: Site rotation when one area frightens you

Before anyone says it: yes, I have an appointment booked. I would still like to hear from people who have had this.

I have had a fortnight of this and then three good days and then another fortnight, and the pattern is the bit I would most like to understand.

Nobody warned me about this specifically and I am starting to think that is because it is common enough that everybody assumed I knew.

I will come back and say what my appointment produced, because I hate reading threads that stop before the answer.

The first month I had a friend on the phone every time. By month three I did not need to, and she still asks about it.

Holding a boundary: we do not swap remedies in this circle as though they were prescriptions. Describing what happened to you is welcome; telling somebody what to take is not.

My anxiety was mostly about doing it wrong. Once my nurse watched me do one and said it was fine, most of it evaporated.

Ozzy G, thank you for that. It gives me somewhere to start from.

I found having everything laid out in advance helped enormously. Rummaging for things while working myself up was where it always went badly.

Coming back to say that the dread went. Not immediately, not tidily, but it went, and I have not thought about it in over a year.

What Sable described happened to me too, in a slightly different order.

The two hours before were always worse than the thing itself, every single time, for about four months. Naming that pattern was the beginning of it getting better.

Gently disagreeing with Perrine, or rather adding the other half of it.

Mine is now genuinely uneventful and I remember very clearly that it was not, and I would not want anybody to think it was uneventful from the start.

Please do not white-knuckle this for months in silence. There are practical things people can help with and none of them require you to be brave.

Gently disagreeing with Isla, or rather adding the other half of it.

Mine got much worse for a fortnight after one that stung, and then went back to baseline. One bad experience can reset the whole thing temporarily.

Adding a name to the list of people this helped.

Cold hands made mine worse. Warming up for a minute beforehand genuinely changed the experience and I found that out by accident.

What helped was letting it be a big deal at first rather than insisting it was not. Pretending it was nothing made it worse for about two months.

Brack has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

My nurse talked me through the first one on the phone and stayed on the line, and I have never been more grateful for nine minutes of somebody's time.

I was three days late twice because I could not face it, and I want to say that here because I felt like the only person that had ever happened to.

My partner did the first several. That is a completely legitimate arrangement and it is not a permanent one unless you want it to be.

Facilitator note: pharmacists are the most underused people in this whole business and several of the questions on this page are ones they answer in ten minutes at a counter.

I looked away for the first six months and then one day watched, and it was so much less than my imagination had been supplying.
