Something I have been sitting with: The arithmetic, written out honestly Not looking for advice so much as other people's experience.

I have a letter in front of me and I do not know what it actually says.

I would rather hear from somebody whose appeal failed as well as from somebody whose succeeded, because I want to know what I am walking into.

I have a letter in front of me and I genuinely cannot tell what it is saying, which I suspect is not entirely accidental.

I have been refused and I would like to appeal properly rather than emotionally, because the emotional version is what I sent last time.

Thanks. Actual numbers welcome if you are willing; if not, the sequence of steps would help just as much.

The comparison shopping is worth doing once a year and not worth doing every month, in my experience.

Stepping in to say that the arithmetic people post here is genuinely useful and is also their arithmetic. Yours will have different lines in it and that is the point of asking.

Picking up Petra’s point rather than starting a new one.

Something that helped was writing down what it buys me, in plain terms, which made the annual figure feel like a decision rather than a drain.

My prescriber was completely unembarrassed by the money conversation, which made it much easier than I had expected.

What surprised me was how many people here are in the same position and how little it gets discussed anywhere else.

Reading this at half past six with a cup of tea and nodding at every line.

Nothing here sells anything and nothing here takes a commission, which is why I trust the numbers people quote in this circle.

My honest experience is that the cost has been the hardest sustained part of this, harder than any symptom.

The arithmetic is the arithmetic and there is no shame in it. I sat down with a calculator and a cup of tea and worked out what it actually costs me per year.

Ilya said something I want to sit with for a second.

Coming back to say I have kept it going for two years, that it has been tight in places, and that the planning is what made it possible.

Something worth knowing: prices moved over two years and I only noticed because I was tracking. Worth checking occasionally.

What I got wrong was not budgeting for the first six months properly, because that period cost more than the steady state does.

Peronel, thank you for that. It gives me somewhere to start from.

The thing I underestimated was how the cost affects the decision-making. I was reluctant to raise problems because of what a change might cost.

My experience is that this got easier once I had a plan for a year rather than reacting month to month.

Picking up Kate’s point rather than starting a new one.

I would say do not go without something else that matters to make this work. I did for a while and it was not a good trade.

Noticing this thread has stayed practical rather than becoming a complaint, which takes discipline when the subject is this frustrating.

I found that being honest with my partner about the number was harder than the number itself, and better once done.
