A question rather than an update: What the cost has displaced in my budget

This is the boring administrative kind of problem, which I gather is the kind that actually gets solved.

I would rather hear from somebody whose appeal failed as well as from somebody whose succeeded, because I want to know what I am walking into.

What I need is the practical sequence. Who to contact, in what order, with what attached, and how long each step took.

I will report back with what happened, because appeals threads that stop are the most frustrating kind.

What it displaced in my budget was the honest question, and answering it properly took me an evening and was worth doing.

I paused for two months when things got tight and then restarted, and that is a completely ordinary thing to have done.

Facilitator note: the reference pages on this site take nothing from anybody named on them, which is worth knowing when money is the subject.

Petra — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

The arithmetic is the arithmetic and there is no shame in it. I sat down with a calculator and a cup of tea and worked out what it actually costs me per year.

What I would say is have the cost conversation. Mine produced two alternatives and neither had been mentioned unprompted.

Kate, thank you for that. It gives me somewhere to start from.

I keep a small buffer specifically for this so that a bad month does not force a decision I would not otherwise make.

Llian has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

Something practical: I worked out the annual figure rather than the monthly one, because monthly made it look manageable in a way that hid the total.

The bit in the middle is the bit I needed to read.

Coming back to what Hettie wrote further up, because it is the bit I keep thinking about.

My prescriber was completely unembarrassed by the money conversation, which made it much easier than I had expected.

Something that helped was writing down what it buys me, in plain terms, which made the annual figure feel like a decision rather than a drain.

Marking that I am here, in case that counts for anything today.

Mo said something I want to sit with for a second.

The thing I underestimated was how the cost affects the decision-making. I was reluctant to raise problems because of what a change might cost.

I would gently say that if cost is about to force you to stop, talk to your prescriber first. There were options in my case.

What helped was somebody here being completely frank about their own numbers, which gave me permission to look properly at mine.

The comparison shopping is worth doing once a year and not worth doing every month, in my experience.

I found that being honest with my partner about the number was harder than the number itself, and better once done.

Stepping in to say that keeping every reference number is the single most repeated piece of advice in this circle's history, and it keeps being right.

Something worth knowing: prices moved over two years and I only noticed because I was tracking. Worth checking occasionally.
