Starting a thread on this because it keeps coming up in ones and twos: Telling my partner what this actually costs

Money post. No apologies, this circle is for it.

I have a letter in front of me and I genuinely cannot tell what it is saying, which I suspect is not entirely accidental.

I have not asked about the cost side at any appointment because I was embarrassed, and I have now worked out that this was expensive.

I have a deadline on this and I have wasted two weeks of it trying to find out who to write to.

Thank you for reading. I know money posts are uncomfortable and I would rather be uncomfortable than stuck.

The comparison shopping is worth doing once a year and not worth doing every month, in my experience.

Saff — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

I found that being honest with my partner about the number was harder than the number itself, and better once done.

Facilitator note: this community sells nothing, brokers nothing and takes nothing from anybody. That is why the numbers people quote here can be trusted.

Something worth knowing: prices moved over two years and I only noticed because I was tracking. Worth checking occasionally.

My experience is that this got easier once I had a plan for a year rather than reacting month to month.

The thing I underestimated was how the cost affects the decision-making. I was reluctant to raise problems because of what a change might cost.

I would gently say that if cost is about to force you to stop, talk to your prescriber first. There were options in my case.

Coming back to what Zoë wrote further up, because it is the bit I keep thinking about.

What helped was somebody here being completely frank about their own numbers, which gave me permission to look properly at mine.

The arithmetic is the arithmetic and there is no shame in it. I sat down with a calculator and a cup of tea and worked out what it actually costs me per year.

Coming back to say I have kept it going for two years, that it has been tight in places, and that the planning is what made it possible.

What I would say is have the cost conversation. Mine produced two alternatives and neither had been mentioned unprompted.

I keep a small buffer specifically for this so that a bad month does not force a decision I would not otherwise make.

This is the honest version, and the honest version is harder to write.

Reading Gavin, I recognised more of that than I expected to.

Something I got right was deciding in advance what I would do if the cost rose, so that I was not deciding it in a difficult week.

What it displaced in my budget was the honest question, and answering it properly took me an evening and was worth doing.

What Saff described happened to me too, in a slightly different order.

I paused for two months when things got tight and then restarted, and that is a completely ordinary thing to have done.

Coming back to what Mo wrote further up, because it is the bit I keep thinking about.

Something practical: I worked out the annual figure rather than the monthly one, because monthly made it look manageable in a way that hid the total.

My prescriber knew about an option that was cheaper and I had never asked, for a year, out of embarrassment.

Stepping in to note that an alternative arrangement exists in several systems and is rarely offered unprompted. Worth asking for by name.

Hettie, thank you for that. It gives me somewhere to start from.

My review appointments cost money too, and building those into the annual figure changed my sense of the total considerably.
