Cold storage on a ward

Something I have been sitting with: Cold storage on a ward Not looking for advice so much as other people's experience.

Anyone else navigating this? I feel as though every piece of advice I read was written for someone with a completely different week.

I have worked out a system that mostly holds and there is one part of it that keeps failing, and I would like to hear how other people solved that part.

Every piece of advice I read appears to have been written for somebody with a completely different week from mine, so I am asking people whose weeks look like this.

No hurry. I have a fortnight before I need to decide anything.

I have found the guides here more usable than most because they do not assume a nine-to-five, which is rarer than it should be.

What surprised me was that my energy on shift improved noticeably at about month five, and that has been the durable benefit.

I do mine straight after my last night, before sleeping, and that has been the most consistent slot I have found in four years.

I asked for my review appointments to be after a run of days rather than nights, and it made them considerably more useful.

My experience is that this is entirely manageable on shifts and requires more deliberate planning than anybody tells you.

Somebody here suggested treating my rota as the calendar rather than the month, and reorganising my planning that way solved several things at once.

The thing I would say to a new shift worker is: pick your anchor day and protect it. Everything else can be flexible.

What helped was a fixed anchor that had nothing to do with shifts — mine is Sunday, whatever Sunday looks like that week.

Eating on nights is its own subject and none of the general advice covers it. I eat before, once during, and something small after.

Nothing to add except that I am glad this thread exists.

My storage question was the one I asked here first, and I got a practical answer within an hour from somebody on a similar rota.

Coming back to say the anchor day held through two rota changes and a ward move, which is more than most of my habits have managed.

My week has no shape and everything written about this assumes one. Anchoring to a fixed day rather than a fixed time was what finally worked.

I do mine on the same weekday regardless of what shift I am on, and I gave up on the time of day entirely about a year ago.

Nights were the hard part. Working out what counted as a day when my days ran from nine at night took months.

My rota comes out a month ahead and I now plan around it properly rather than reacting to it, and that alone fixed most of my problems.

Torrin said something I want to sit with for a second.

The rotating pattern meant my sleep was already a mess, and separating that from anything else was more or less impossible.

Closing note: this stays linked from the circle landing page and stays open. Late arrivals with a different arrangement are very welcome.

Gently disagreeing with Boaz, or rather adding the other half of it.

Something practical: a cool bag in the locker, and a note in my phone so I do not have to think about it at four in the morning.
