Starting a thread on this because it keeps coming up in ones and twos: Compliments that felt like an indictment of before

I have been sitting on this for a month.

I do not think anything is wrong exactly. I think something is different and I have not caught up with it yet.

I have spent a long time managing everybody else's feelings about this and I have not looked at my own, and that is what this post is.

I am aware this may be about something older than any of this, and that is part of what I am trying to work out by writing it down.

I do not know how to end this properly, so I am just going to stop here and press the button.

I would gently say that if this has become the main thing you think about, that is worth mentioning to somebody rather than managing alone.

The thing that has helped most is spending time doing things where my body is useful rather than looked at. Swimming, mostly, badly.

I have stopped reading anything that presents bodies as a before and a subsequent state. That single decision improved my year measurably.

Stepping in to say that a hard week does not need a cause to be legitimate. Several replies have been looking for one on this person's behalf.

The kindest thing anybody said to me was that I did not owe anybody a reaction to their compliment.

Something practical: I bought two things that fit, properly, rather than waiting. The waiting was itself a message I was sending myself.

Gwilym has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

I found this circle at a point where I was reading things that were making it worse, and the change of company was most of the improvement.

You have said something a lot of us have not managed to. Thank you.

This is the post I wish had existed when I was looking for it.

What helped was other people describing exactly the same complicated feelings without tidying them into a lesson.

My experience is that other people's attention was the destabilising thing, more than anything about my own body.

Thank you for writing this. I am not going to add information to it. What you have described is very common and very rarely said out loud.

What I would say is that this is harder than the physical side and gets a fraction of the discussion. I am glad this circle exists for it.
