Body neutrality made more sense to me than positivity

Body neutrality made more sense to me than positivity Writing it down partly to work out what I actually think.

Not asking anyone to fix this. Mostly saying it out loud somewhere it will be read kindly.

I have read a great deal about the physical side of this and almost nothing about the part I am actually struggling with.

I am not in crisis and I do not want anybody worried. I am flat, and I have been flat for longer than I would like, and I am naming it here first.

Thanks. Saying it here first has made the idea of saying it to somebody else considerably less impossible.

Coming back to say it has got easier, slowly, without me solving it. Some things get quieter rather than getting answered.

Bodies are not projects, and I have agreed with that sentence for years and only recently started believing it.

Esme said something I want to sit with for a second.

Strangers commenting was the thing I was least prepared for, and I still have no good response to it after two years.

Facilitator note: nothing in this circle is treatment and nothing here is advice. The people who know your history are the ones to speak to.

What helped was other people describing exactly the same complicated feelings without tidying them into a lesson.

Tavish has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

My relationship with my body has been complicated my whole life and none of this created that. It surfaced it, which is a different thing.

No wisdom, just: I am sorry. That sounds genuinely hard.

Nothing here is medical advice and nothing here is therapy. If this is taking up most of your attention, please do speak to somebody qualified.

Something that helped was reducing how much I looked. Not as a punishment. Just less often, and it made the looking less loaded.

Reading Rin, I recognised more of that than I expected to.

I had assumed this would resolve itself and it did not. It needed actual attention, and in my case some therapy, and I resisted both for a year.

Building on what Gwilym wrote rather than answering the original question.

"You look well" landed strangely for a long time. I know it is meant kindly. It still made me feel observed.

Quietly agreeing from the other side of the country.

The changing room was where it caught up with me. Nothing had changed in that room except that I was looking, and the looking was the problem.

What I found was that how I felt about my body moved almost independently of anything else. Good weeks and difficult weeks with no obvious cause.

I liked how I looked before as well. That is a complicated thing to say in most places and it is straightforwardly true.

The mirror thing comes and goes. Some months I barely notice and some months it is the first thing I think about, and I have stopped trying to control which.

What I would say is that this is harder than the physical side and gets a fraction of the discussion. I am glad this circle exists for it.

Picking up Orsolya’s point rather than starting a new one.

Photographs are difficult for me and I have stopped apologising for stepping out of them.

This is why I read the boring weeks. Thank you for the boring weeks.

I want to slow this right down. Something difficult has been said and the thread has moved on quickly. Let us stay with the person who said it.

My experience is that other people's attention was the destabilising thing, more than anything about my own body.
