Starting a thread on this because it keeps coming up in ones and twos: The lifestyle programme I was referred to, honestly reviewed

Bringing this here rather than to the general circle because the specifics change the answer.

Some background first, because it genuinely changes the answer and I have been given general advice three times that did not apply to me.

What I cannot work out is which of the two stories a particular change belongs to, and I suspect nobody can tell me from the outside.

Happy to answer questions if any of the detail would be useful to somebody else in the same position.

I had assumed this was a straight line to something worse and my GP was clear that it is not, and that framing changed how I approached the whole year.

Obi, answering your question directly rather than going round the houses.

Something practical: I got a copy of every result going back six years and put them in one place, and the trend told me more than any single figure.

Obi — taking your question as you asked it, because I think the thread has widened it.

My experience is that the small things held and the big changes did not. Three months of enormous effort achieved less than a year of two small habits.

Facilitator note: writing a one-page summary of your history to hand over has come up three times in this circle this year and it is genuinely good advice.

Coming back to what Viv wrote further up, because it is the bit I keep thinking about.

I found the family history conversation useful and slightly upsetting. It explained a great deal and it also meant talking to relatives about things we do not discuss.

This is the honest version, and the honest version is harder to write.

The bit I got wrong was treating it as an emergency for a fortnight and then forgetting about it for four months. Steady attention beat intense attention.

My nurse asked what I thought I could sustain rather than what I thought I should do, and that question produced a much more honest plan.

Picking up Sorrel’s point rather than starting a new one.

I would say do not let a number become the whole of how you think about yourself. I did that for about six months and it was not useful.

What I underestimated was how much better I would feel from the changes independently of any number. That turned out to be the durable motivation.

Building on what Lu wrote rather than answering the original question.

My review is annual now and it is a five-minute conversation, which is exactly the amount of attention I want this to have in my life.

Somebody in this circle said this is information rather than a verdict, and I have repeated that to two family members since.

The thing I would flag is that other things can move this figure, and mine turned out to have a second contributor that was worth investigating separately.

I am going to gently discourage anybody from adjusting anything on the basis of this thread. Describing is welcome; instructing is not.

Nothing here is medical advice. The figure is yours, the context is yours, and the person who can interpret both is the one holding your record.
