A fasting glucose that varies enormously

Something I have been sitting with: A fasting glucose that varies enormously Not looking for advice so much as other people's experience.

Some background first, because it matters for the question.

The overlap in symptoms is the difficulty. Two things producing similar sensations and no obvious way to tell them apart from the inside.

I would like to know what other people in this position asked for, because I do not think I am asking for the right things.

Happy to answer questions if any of the detail would be useful to somebody else in the same position.

I would gently say that a single result is not a diagnosis, and mine was rechecked before anything was decided, which I found reassuring.

Sonia, I have been where you are and I would rather say so than stay quiet.

The structured programme was six months of a group meeting and it was much better than I expected. Practical, unpatronising, and free.

Replying to Sonia rather than to anybody above, because I want to answer what was actually asked.

Something worth knowing: my figure had been drifting for four years and nobody had mentioned it. Asking for my old results was genuinely eye-opening.

I want to be plain about what this circle does with something a member has been told was in their head: it does not treat it that way. If that is why you have been slow to post, it is worth knowing in advance.

Gently disagreeing with Nella, or rather adding the other half of it.

I had assumed this was a straight line to something worse and my GP was clear that it is not, and that framing changed how I approached the whole year.

Something practical: I got a copy of every result going back six years and put them in one place, and the trend told me more than any single figure.

My experience is that the small things held and the big changes did not. Three months of enormous effort achieved less than a year of two small habits.

What I found here that I did not find elsewhere was people talking about this without any shame attached to it, which is most of why I stayed.

The bit I got wrong was treating it as an emergency for a fortnight and then forgetting about it for four months. Steady attention beat intense attention.

My nurse asked what I thought I could sustain rather than what I thought I should do, and that question produced a much more honest plan.

Mine was a number on a routine test that nobody had been looking for, and it got my attention in a way that fifteen years of general advice had not.

What Gilly described happened to me too, in a slightly different order.

Coming back at the two-year mark to say the number held, the habits held, and the whole thing has become unremarkable, which was the aim.

Nothing here is medical advice. The figure is yours, the context is yours, and the person who can interpret both is the one holding your record.

This is the honest version, and the honest version is harder to write.

I found the framing difficult at first. It sounded like a warning rather than information, and it took me a while to hear it as the second thing.

My GP was matter-of-fact and offered a structured programme, which I nearly turned down and which turned out to be the most useful thing on offer.

Thank you for the background. It genuinely does change the answer and I am glad you gave it rather than assuming it was too much detail.

The word itself was the useful part. It gave me something specific to act on rather than a vague sense that I should be doing better.
