Starting a thread on this because it keeps coming up in ones and twos: What changed when I slowed down

I have avoided asking about this for six weeks out of pure embarrassment.

Before anyone says it: yes, I have an appointment booked. I would still like to hear from people who have had this, because I would rather go in able to describe it properly.

I would like to hear timescales more than remedies. Knowing how long other people's lasted would turn this from an open-ended thing into a bounded one.

The physical part is manageable. What is wearing me down is the constant low-level monitoring of it, and I would like to stop doing that.

Thank you for reading something this unglamorous. Any experience welcome, and timescales especially.

The thing I underestimated was tiredness as a symptom in its own right. I kept looking for a dramatic cause and it was simply that I was very tired.

Before anyone offers a remedy: what has been described in this thread is on the list of things that need a clinician today rather than a thread. I am going to be firm about that, kindly.

Tomás said something I want to sit with for a second.

The hardest part for me was not the symptom, it was not knowing which category it belonged in. Ordinary tax, or something to raise this week. That distinction is most of what this circle does.

Coming back a fortnight later to say mine settled, because I hate threads that stop halfway through somebody's difficult month.

I would take that to a clinician rather than to us, and I would do it this week — not because it is definitely something, but because it is much easier to rule out than to sit with.

Viv — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

Mine settled at about seven weeks and then lifted over three or four days. I cannot tell you what changed. I can tell you it changed.

Two things that helped, neither of them clever: smaller amounts more often, and drinking considerably more than felt necessary.

What helped me was writing down the time of day it happened. The pattern was completely invisible to me until it was on paper, and then it was obvious.

I want to offer the boring outcome for balance: mine was mild, it lasted a month, and it went. Not every account here needs to be dramatic.

I read this twice. The second time was for the last paragraph.

Nan — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

I had one genuinely rough fortnight in two years. One. I say that because if you only read the difficult threads you will get a badly skewed picture.

What I would ask is whether anything else changed in the same week. Mine turned out to be a completely unrelated thing that I had attributed to the medication for a month.

Please do not read the comments under news articles about this. I lost a fortnight to that and came out of it knowing less than I went in with.

Reading Casper, I recognised more of that than I expected to.

For me the useful question was not what to do about it but how long it typically lasts, because that turned an unbounded problem into a bounded one.

Somebody here told me early on that the aim is to stay on treatment comfortably rather than to endure it, and that changed how quickly I raised things.

I am going to steer us away from comparing severity. It has crept in over the last few replies and it does not help anybody who is currently in it.

Saying it out loud helps other people say it too. Thank you.
