The pharmacist queried it and I did not know what to say

A question rather than an update: The pharmacist queried it and I did not know what to say

Writing this partly to ask and partly because writing it down usually tells me what I think.

What I keep tripping on is not knowing whether where I am is where I should be at this point, and having nobody to ask who is not either selling something or worried about me.

I have written down what has happened, in order, because I find that more useful than my own summary of it. The summary always sounds either better or worse than the weeks actually were.

My prescriber has been fine, genuinely. The problem is that I get nine minutes twice a year and there is no version of nine minutes that covers a whole stage of this.

Thanks all. Genuinely. This circle has been better company than I expected to find anywhere.

Whenever somebody new arrives worried about being slow, I say the same thing: nobody in this circle is going to be impressed by speed, and nobody is keeping score.

Picking up Florrie’s point rather than starting a new one.

Every step up for me came with about ten days of adjustment and then nothing. Knowing that the ten days were coming made them much easier to sit through.

Florrie has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

Going up slowly meant I could actually tell what each change did. When I moved faster at the start, everything happened at once and I could not attribute anything to anything.

Thank you for writing this. I am not going to add information to it. I am going to say that what you have described is very common at this stage and very rarely said out loud.

Gwenda has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

My prescriber and I settled on longer gaps between steps and shorter gaps between conversations, which I would recommend to anybody who finds the schedule stressful.

Slow titration is not the cautious version of this. For some of us it is simply the version that works, and I have stopped framing it as a hedge.

Well said, and thank you for taking the time over it.

I stayed where I was for four months because it suited me there, and the only pressure to move came from me. Not from my prescriber, and certainly not from anybody here.

Somebody in this circle described their pace as "geological" and I have thought about that phrase very fondly ever since. Mine is similar and nobody minds.

I found I needed about three weeks at each step before I knew what that step was like. Two weeks always gave me a half-formed impression that I then acted on.

My prescriber described the aim as staying on treatment comfortably rather than reaching a particular step, and once I heard it that way the pressure evaporated.

What I found hardest was other people's timelines, not my own. Once I stopped reading week-by-week accounts elsewhere, my own pace stopped feeling like a deficiency.

I hold at a step for as long as it is still teaching me something. When a step gets boring, that is usually my sign to talk about the next one.

Reading Florrie, I recognised more of that than I expected to.

A practical note: I keep a single line per step with the date I started it and the date anything settled. It is the most useful piece of paper I own for these conversations.

Coming back to what Florrie wrote further up, because it is the bit I keep thinking about.

Somebody asked me whether slow titration is just fear management, and honestly, partly. It is also symptom management and life management, and I have stopped ranking those.

I am pleased with how this went and I want to say so. Not every thread needs a facilitator and this one mostly did not.

Nine months at one step here and my prescriber has never once suggested moving. She said the schedule is a scaffold and I am not obliged to climb it.
