Hashimoto's and the fatigue overlap

Hashimoto's and the fatigue overlap — putting it in its own thread so it does not get lost in the check-in.

Before anyone says it: yes, I have an appointment booked. I would still like to hear from people who have had this.

I want to describe this accurately rather than politely, because the polite version is what I said at my last appointment and it got me nowhere.

I have had a fortnight of this and then three good days and then another fortnight, and the pattern is the bit I would most like to understand.

No advice needed if you would rather not. Recognition is genuinely enough.

I keep all my results in one document with the dates and the reference ranges, and it has been worth every minute of the hour it took to build.

Gaelan, answering your question directly rather than going round the houses.

What confused me was that two labs used different reference ranges, so a number that looked worse was actually the same. Check the range, not just the figure.

Gaelan, I have been where you are and I would rather say so than stay quiet.

My results have been stable throughout and I am told that is common. I mention it because the threads that get written are usually the ones where something changed.

Stepping in to say that three replies have described three different timescales, and all three are honest. Bodies vary and that is not a failure of anybody's account.

The symptom overlap is genuinely difficult. Tiredness, cold, mood, hair — all of those belong to both stories and none of them tells you which.

Grateful you posted rather than kept it to yourself.

My GP rechecked at twelve weeks as a matter of routine and adjusted, and the whole thing was much less eventful than I had braced for.

Something worth asking: which specific tests are being run. Mine had been getting one for years and the fuller panel answered a question that had been open for ages.

Coming back to what Özlem wrote further up, because it is the bit I keep thinking about.

I asked for a copy of every result, always, and it has let me see a slow drift over three years that nobody would have spotted from one appointment.

The wait between the blood draw and the result is the hard part, and I have never found a way to make that easier other than not thinking about it, badly.

Reading Perry, I recognised more of that than I expected to.

I would say do not adjust anything yourself on the basis of how you feel. I nearly did and my nurse was very clear about why that was a bad idea.

What helped was one clinician taking ownership of the whole picture. Before that I had two people each managing half of me.

My hair shedding turned out to be thyroid-related rather than anything else, and correcting it fixed the shedding within about four months.

Perla — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

Mine needed one adjustment in two years and it was routine. I had expected constant tinkering.

Somebody in this circle told me to write down my questions in order of how much they mattered, because appointments run out of time. Best advice I have had for these reviews.

Grizel, thank you for that. It gives me somewhere to start from.

What I did not know was that a change in one thing can move the numbers in the other, and that is expected rather than alarming.

Holding a boundary: we do not swap remedies in this circle as though they were prescriptions. Describing what happened to you is welcome; telling somebody what to take is not.

I take mine at a completely different time of day now and it is the only change that was needed. Very small, very effective.
