Something I have been sitting with: The pub is still the pub without the pints Not looking for advice so much as other people's experience.

Practical question, and possibly a silly one.

The social side of this is harder for me than any of the logistics, and I have not found anywhere else where that is discussed practically.

Practical question, and possibly a silly one, but the logistics of this are defeating me considerably more than the medicine is.

No hurry. I have a fortnight before I need to decide anything.

What surprised me was how much I did not miss it. I had expected to and I genuinely did not, and that told me something.

Ned, I have been where you are and I would rather say so than stay quiet.

My honest report is that I still drink, less, and I enjoy it more, which was not the outcome I predicted.

The thing I would flag is that if drinking has become a way of managing something, that is a different conversation and worth having with somebody qualified.

If you come back later and say what you actually ended up doing, that is the post the next person reads. Threads that stop are the ones that leave somebody stranded.

What helped was telling one friend, so that in a group there was somebody who knew and quietly covered for me.

My tolerance came back partially after about a year, which nobody had told me might happen and which I should have expected.

Ada said something I want to sit with for a second.

Something I got wrong was assuming an ordinary evening would go the way ordinary evenings used to. It did not and I had not planned for it.

The social pressure was harder than the physical change. Explaining why I was not drinking was the whole difficulty.

I read this twice. The second time was for the last paragraph.

What I would say is to test this somewhere safe rather than at a wedding. I did the opposite and regretted it.

I found that eating less alongside drinking was the actual mechanism in my case, rather than anything more mysterious.

Something practical: I switched to something non-alcoholic that looks like a drink, and the number of questions I get dropped to zero.

I had one evening where I was much more affected than expected and it frightened me, and I have been careful and fine since.

Building on what Obi O wrote rather than answering the original question.

I found that having a good non-alcoholic option to hand meant nobody asked, and the asking had been the problem.

Reading Nkechi, I recognised more of that than I expected to.

What I would say is that the change caught me out socially more than physically. My rounds were the same and my capacity was not.

It simply stopped appealing. I had not decided anything and one day I noticed I had not wanted a drink in three weeks.

Mine hit much faster and lasted longer, and the following day was noticeably worse than it used to be.

Two things, both boring. Nobody here can tell you what to do about your week. And describing your own week is genuinely useful to somebody planning theirs.

Perdy has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

My relationship with drinking changed in a way I have found mostly positive and slightly disorienting, and this circle is where I worked that out.
