How often is reasonable to be tested

How often is reasonable to be tested — putting it in its own thread so it does not get lost in the check-in.

Evidence question. I would rather have an honest "we do not know" than a confident answer.

My question is about what a particular measurement does and does not tell you, because I think I have been reading more into it than it says.

I would like to understand the limits of this properly rather than the headline, because the headline is the part everybody already knows.

No hurry on this one. It is a reading question rather than a decision.

My results improved slowly over eighteen months and the improvement was only visible because I had kept the earlier ones.

Nothing here is medical advice and nobody in this circle is reading your results as a clinician. We are company for the reading.

Facilitator note before this goes further: nobody in this circle is reading anybody's results as a clinician, and the person who ordered the test is the person who interprets it. We are company for the reading, which is a real thing and a narrow one.

Bring the printout. Half of what I understand about my own results came from somebody in this circle reading them alongside me.

Same here, and I am glad you said it first.

Mira, thank you for that. It gives me somewhere to start from.

The thing that helped most was having a second set six months later, because one set is a snapshot and two is a direction.

I would say bring the questions written down, in priority order, because these appointments run out of time before they run out of subject.

What I underestimated was how much better the conversation went once I could name the tests I was asking about.

Gwyneth — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

I found that a lot of what worried me was seasonal or explained by something ordinary, and having a series made that obvious.

What I got wrong was interpreting a result myself and worrying for a fortnight before an appointment that took two minutes to reassure me.

Here, reading, and glad you posted.

Something worth knowing: fasting or not fasting changed one of mine enough to matter, and nobody had told me which it needed.

Coming back after my annual set to say everything was unremarkable, and leaving that here because the boring results deserve a post too.

Gently: a figure outside a reference range is a question, not a verdict. Ranges are population statistics and the person holding your history is the one who can say what yours means.

The reference range matters as much as the number. Two labs gave me figures that looked different and were the same once I checked the ranges.
