A question rather than an update: A year off and mostly steady

I have been reading here for a few weeks and have not posted, so this is me posting.

I have read the guides here, which were more useful than anything else I have found, and I still have a question about the timing that they do not cover.

I am aware some of this may simply be what this stage is like. I would still like to hear from people who have been through it, because I have spent a fortnight assuming I am the only one.

No rush on replies. I am not going anywhere and neither, apparently, is this stage.

Mine was a side-effect decision, taken carefully, with two conversations and a proper look at the alternatives first. It was the right call and it was still sad.

The practical thing I got right was writing down why I was stopping while I was still on it. Two months later I could not have reconstructed my own reasoning.

I stopped because my prescriber said so, which is a very different experience from choosing it, and it took me longer to make peace with because it was not mine.

Gently: you have apologised three times in a post where you have done nothing that requires an apology. This circle does not need you to be further along than you are.

The tapering conversation was more nuanced than I expected. It was not simply stop or continue; there were several shapes in between and I had not known that.

What Bryony described happened to me too, in a slightly different order.

Six months off and I am fine. Different, and fine. I came back to this circle to say so because when I was leaving I could not find anybody who had.

I would gently suggest keeping your journal going through the stopping. Mine is the only reason I know what actually happened in those months rather than what I remember happening.

My stop was abrupt because of a supply problem rather than a choice, and I want to name that as its own category. It happens and it is nobody's decision.

That is a kinder way of putting it than I have managed about myself.

Reading Tressa, I recognised more of that than I expected to.

I came off because of cost, not because of anything clinical, and it took me a long time to say that without embarrassment. It is an extremely common reason and it is not a moral failing.

What I found hardest was other people treating it as a failure while my prescriber treated it as a normal clinical decision. Their reaction was the difficult part, not the decision.

Coming back to what Sinéad wrote further up, because it is the bit I keep thinking about.

The circle carried me through the first eight weeks after stopping more than anything else did. Nothing anybody said, particularly. The turning up.

Dash has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

What helped me was deciding in advance what I would do if things changed after stopping, so that I was not making that decision from inside a difficult month.

I stopped and did not go back, and I am at peace with it, and I would not present that as a recommendation to anybody. It was my situation and my body.

Well said, and thank you for taking the time over it.

I stopped, and about six weeks later the background hum came back, and that was the part I was least prepared for. Not the physical side. The noise.

Holding a boundary for a moment: we do not compare progress in this circle, and a couple of replies have edged towards it. No blame; just steering back.

Reading Benedikt, I recognised more of that than I expected to.

I came off for eight months and went back on, and I want both halves of that on the record because threads that only cover the leaving are only half a story.
