A question rather than an update: The cost conversation in year three

Long one, sorry. I have been chewing on this for a fortnight.

What I am trying to work out is whether this is a phase with an end to it or the shape of things now, and I do not think I can tell that from inside it.

I nearly did not post this because it feels like a small thing to be stuck on. It has taken up most of my thinking for a month, so apparently it is not small to me.

What I keep tripping on is not knowing whether where I am is where I should be at this point, and having nobody to ask who is not either selling something or worried about me.

Yes, three. I know how that reads written down, and it is the number, so it is going in the title where people can see it.

Anyway. Thank you for reading this far. Any experience of this stage gratefully received, and I will come back and say what happened.

The practical shape of my maintenance is: one review a year, one set of bloods, one conversation about whether anything has changed. That is genuinely all of it now.

Picking up Bridie’s point rather than starting a new one.

I still come to this circle in maintenance because the newer members ask the questions that keep me honest about what I actually know.

Stepping in to say that nobody here is behind. There is no schedule this community keeps and nobody is measuring anybody against one.

What I did not expect was how much of maintenance is about other people forgetting. The interest fades and you are left doing the same thing quietly, which is fine, and is also lonely sometimes.

My prescriber reduced me and we have held there for fourteen months. It has been the most uneventful fourteen months of my adult life and I am not complaining.

Here, reading, and glad you posted.

Grover has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

Nobody prepared me for the strange flatness of it. Not sadness. Just the absence of a project, after two years of having one.

Maintenance is where I finally had to deal with things the earlier stages had let me postpone. That was harder than any of the physical adjustment.

Year two is the part nobody writes about, and I think that is because it is not a story. It is Wednesdays. Very good Wednesdays, but Wednesdays.

Coming back to this thread a year on to say that the dullness held. Nothing to report, which is the report.

Something that helped: I decided to keep journalling weekly in maintenance even when there was nothing to say. Those entries are how I noticed a slow change I would otherwise have missed.

Gabe said something I want to sit with for a second.

My honest account of maintenance is that it took about four months to stop bracing. I kept waiting for something to go wrong and nothing did, and eventually I put the brace down.

I have been in maintenance long enough to have had two dull years and one difficult one. The difficult one had nothing to do with the medication and everything to do with my life.

The conversation I found hardest in maintenance was about how long. My prescriber's answer was that we would keep reviewing it, which is honest and was not what I wanted.

What Moss described happened to me too, in a slightly different order.

I reduced, held, and then reduced again eight months later, both times slowly and both times after a proper conversation. Neither move was dramatic and both were fine.

I want to say plainly that stopping, pausing and restarting are ordinary shapes in this community and nobody who has done any of them owes an explanation.

Maintenance is where the non-scale things came into their own for me. All the things I noticed in year one turned out to be the things that stayed.
