Starting a thread on this because it keeps coming up in ones and twos: What actually is happening physiologically — the reading group version

I have been reading here for a few weeks and have not posted, so this is me posting.

I nearly did not post this because it feels like a small thing to be stuck on. It has taken up most of my thinking for a month, so apparently it is not small to me.

I am aware some of this may simply be what this stage is like. I would still like to hear from people who have been through it, because I have spent a fortnight assuming I am the only one.

No rush on replies. I am not going anywhere and neither, apparently, is this stage.

I asked at my review whether a long flat stretch meant something was wrong and was told, gently, that bodies are not linear and the assumption that they should be is the odd bit.

Reading back through this circle's older threads was what got me through mine. Dozens of people, all convinced theirs was the permanent one, all still here.

Aiko — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

The practical thing I did was set a date twelve weeks out to review it properly, and then deliberately stop thinking about it until that date. It gave me the fortnight back.

Gently: you have apologised three times in a post where you have done nothing that requires an apology. This circle does not need you to be further along than you are.

Coming back to what Sable wrote further up, because it is the bit I keep thinking about.

I want to add the unglamorous version: mine was boring rather than distressing. Weeks of nothing, mild irritation, and then it moved. Not every plateau is a crisis.

Reading this at half past six with a cup of tea and nodding at every line.

Coming back six months later to close the loop, because I hate threads that stop. Mine lasted seventeen weeks and then quietly ended and I did not notice for a fortnight.

Tor, thank you for that. It gives me somewhere to start from.

Twelve weeks of nothing here too. I remember the exact fortnight when I stopped believing anything would change, and then it did, and I still cannot tell you why.

The plateau was not the hard part for me. The hard part was what I started telling myself about the plateau after about week five.

Building on what Gitta wrote rather than answering the original question.

Something that reframed it: a flat stretch is weather, not a verdict. Somebody wrote that here two years ago and I have carried it around ever since.

Something I had to unlearn: a plateau is not evidence that I did something wrong. I spent six weeks auditing my own behaviour for a mistake that was not there.

Picking up Tavita’s point rather than starting a new one.

I found that keeping a two-line diary through a plateau was the only way to see that anything at all was happening. From inside the week it looked like nothing.

Nkechi — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

What helped was giving the flat stretch a job. I used mine to sort out sleep, which had been quietly terrible for a year and had nothing to do with any of this.

That is a kinder way of putting it than I have managed about myself.

Plateau weeks are the ones where this community is most useful, in my experience. There is nothing to celebrate and nothing to fix, and the only thing that helps is company.

I nearly stopped during mine, and the only reason I did not was that I had promised to come to a circle call on the Thursday and did not want to arrive having quit on the Tuesday.

Stepping in to say that nobody here is behind. There is no schedule this community keeps and nobody is measuring anybody against one.

Ada has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

My prescriber was completely unbothered by mine, which annoyed me at the time and turned out to be the correct response. She said bodies do this and asked me to come back in eight weeks.
