Starting a thread on this because it keeps coming up in ones and twos: How I got through the first fortnight

This is a difficult one to write and I have deleted it twice.

I do not have a question exactly. I have a thing I have noticed about myself and no idea whether it is worth mentioning to anybody.

Something shifted a few months ago and I have only just been able to put words to it, and the words are still not quite right.

Not asking anyone to fix this. Mostly saying it out loud somewhere it will be read kindly, which I have not managed anywhere else.

I do not know how to end this properly, so I am just going to stop here and press the button.

I would gently say that if you have not eaten properly for days, that is worth a phone call rather than waiting for it to pass.

Holding the boundary once, clearly: no figures, no comparisons and no lists in this circle. That has been the rule since it opened and it is not negotiable.

What Wren described happened to me too, in a slightly different order.

Bereavement support was available where I am and I did not know for eight months. Worth asking about early rather than late.

You have said something a lot of us have not managed to. Thank you.

Wren has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

Somebody in this circle sat with me on a thread for an evening and said almost nothing and it was exactly what I needed.

I stopped everything for six weeks, with my prescriber's agreement, and started again when I could. That was the right shape for me.

What I found hardest was people asking how I was in a way that required a manageable answer.

Picking up Nora’s point rather than starting a new one.

My experience is that routine helped more than anything anybody said. Small, repeated, unremarkable things, done at the same times.

I paused everything and my prescriber was completely supportive and said the timing of a restart was entirely mine.

Núria — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

The kindest thing said to me here was that I did not have to be doing anything about it. Just describing it was enough.

Anniversaries are their own thing and I now put them in the calendar deliberately so they do not ambush me.

I had to tell my prescriber what had happened, and I nearly did not, and it changed the whole conversation for the better.

What I found was that grief and appetite are tangled in a way nobody had ever mentioned to me, and separating them was not possible.

Toast. For about a month it was toast, and somebody here told me that was fine and it genuinely helped to be told.

Nora — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

Six weeks in was harder than the first week for me. Everybody had gone back to their lives and I was still in mine.

Eating went completely for about a fortnight and my GP was more concerned about that than I was, and she was right to be.

Coming back a year on to say that eating is ordinary again, that the grief is not gone, and that both of those things can be true.

Thank you for saying the hard part. It makes it easier for the next person, which is most of how this community actually works.

My family all handled it differently and food was where our differences showed up, which I had not anticipated at all.
