Autistic and being told to just listen to my body Writing it down partly to work out what I actually think.

This is a difficult one to write and I have deleted it twice.

I am aware this may be about something older than any of this, and that is part of what I am trying to work out by writing it down.

The thing I keep coming back to is that I expected to feel one way and I feel another, and the gap between those is what I want to talk about.

I do not have a question exactly. I have a thing I have noticed about myself and no idea whether it is worth mentioning to anybody.

If you have felt anything like this, I would like to know. If you have not, that is worth knowing too.

What I got wrong was assuming I would remember. I do not remember. Everything that works for me is written down or automated.

Somebody in this circle described a body that does not send clear signals, and it was the first time I had seen that written down anywhere.

Gently disagreeing with Tobias, or rather adding the other half of it.

I found appointments difficult for reasons unrelated to the subject, and writing everything down beforehand solved most of it.

Holding the boundary once, clearly: no figures, no comparisons and no lists in this circle. That has been the rule since it opened and it is not negotiable.

Reading Tobias, I recognised more of that than I expected to.

My ADHD medication and everything else needed a proper look at together, and a pharmacist did that better than either prescriber had.

What helped was making everything the same. Same day, same time, same order, same place, and removing every decision I could.

The thing I could not do was notice a symptom in the moment. I could only notice it in retrospect from notes, so notes became essential.

Tacita — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

I would say build the structure before you need it. I improvised for three months and it went badly, then I built a system and it has held for two years.

Thank you for the update. Threads that stop are the worst kind.

Sensory change was real. Textures I had eaten my whole life became impossible for about two months and nobody had warned me.

Picking up Esme’s point rather than starting a new one.

What surprised me was how much better I felt once one specific sensory issue was resolved. It had been draining more than I realised.

My notes are the only reason I can answer questions about myself. Without them I would have nothing to bring to a review at all.

Noting for anybody reading later: if the person who opened this has come back, their own words are worth more than any reply to them. It is easy to read the top of a page and stop there.

Building on what Tarq wrote rather than answering the original question.

I would gently say that if you need things explained differently, ask. Mine were, once I asked, and the appointments improved immediately.
