My wife started six months after me and it changed our house — putting it in its own thread so it does not get lost in the check-in.

Practical question, and possibly a silly one.

What I am after is the version of this that works when nobody is helping, because that is my situation and most accounts assume otherwise.

The arrangements are the hard bit for me. Nothing medical has been difficult; the organising has been relentless.

Six months is the honest figure, taken from the two-line diary I keep rather than from memory, and memory had it lower.

If anybody has an arrangement that works and is willing to write it out, I would be very grateful.

What surprised me was that the person I expected to be difficult was supportive and the person I expected to be supportive was not.

Two things, both boring. Nobody here can tell you what to do about your week. And describing your own week is genuinely useful to somebody planning theirs.

Something practical: I told my partner exactly what would help during a difficult week, in advance, in writing, and it worked.

Wren has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

I hid the box for six weeks in a two-bedroom flat, which is ridiculous, and it was about shame rather than about him.

Picking up Tegan’s point rather than starting a new one.

My sister started too, six months after me, and it has been unexpectedly lovely to have somebody in the house who understands.

The comments at family meals were relentless for about a year and then stopped, mostly because I stopped responding to them.

My family's reaction was the hardest part and I have had to accept that some of them are not going to come round.

What I would say is that telling people is a separate decision from doing it, and you can take as long as you want over the first.

Something I did not expect was how much of our relationship had been organised around food, and how much we had to rebuild.

I have read this twice now. Thank you for writing it.

Gently noticing that we have drifted from the original question into a related one. Both are worth having and only one was asked.

What I did not anticipate was how much better things got once I stopped managing everybody's feelings about it as well as my own.
