Starting a thread on this because it keeps coming up in ones and twos: Protein on a very small budget

Anyone else navigating this? I feel as though every piece of advice I read was written for someone with a completely different week.

The thing I have not been able to find anywhere is how people manage this when the week has no fixed shape at all.

I have a plan for the ordinary weeks and no plan at all for the unusual ones, and the unusual ones are where everything has gone wrong.

Every piece of advice I read appears to have been written for somebody with a completely different week from mine, so I am asking people whose weeks look like this.

I will come back and say what I settled on, in case it is useful to the next person asking this.

Something practical: I registered properly rather than staying with a home practice, and it removed about half my logistical problems.

I asked the university health service and they were far more helpful than I had assumed they would be. Worth trying before assuming.

What helped was finding out exactly what I was entitled to, which took an afternoon and turned out to be considerably more than I expected.

Thank you for asking the practical question. This circle is at its best on exactly this and the answers are already better than any guide I could write.

I found the cost conversation with my prescriber embarrassing and it produced a practical alternative I had not known about.

Obie said something I want to sit with for a second.

What I would say is ask about every reduction and scheme that exists. Nobody tells you and several of them applied to me.

Building on what Tansy wrote rather than answering the original question.

The fridge in a shared house was a genuine problem and I solved it with a small locked box and a conversation with my housemates.

My budget for this is fixed and small and I plan the whole year around it rather than month to month.

I would encourage anybody here to write down what things actually cost over a year. Mine was less than I had feared and knowing was worth a lot.

Bevan — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

My experience of the health service as a student was much better once I stopped treating it as a last resort.

What I would say to somebody starting is that there is no shame in the cheap version of anything. It works or it does not, and mine works.

Building on what Shade wrote rather than answering the original question.

I have found the check-ins here better than the circles for me, because two lines fit in a day that has no room in it.

Picking up Nev’s point rather than starting a new one.

The bit nobody mentions is how much of this assumes you can take a phone call during working hours. I could not, for a year.

Something practical: everything I need fits in one small bag, deliberately, because I have moved four times since starting.

What helped most was one member here who had done this on a similar budget and simply told me the practical order to do things in.

Stepping in to say that asking for help with logistics is not a smaller kind of asking. It is most of what makes this sustainable.

Nothing here sells anything and nothing here takes a commission, and on the money side of this that matters more than usual.
