A question rather than an update: Thirteen hours, a cool bag and airport security

Practical question, and possibly a silly one.

The arrangements are the hard bit for me. Nothing medical has been difficult; the organising has been relentless.

Practical question, and possibly a silly one, but the logistics of this are defeating me considerably more than the medicine is.

I have a plan for the ordinary weeks and no plan at all for the unusual ones, and the unusual ones are where everything has gone wrong.

I have checked my notes before posting, so thirteen hours is accurate rather than the impression I had been carrying around.

Thanks in advance. Practical detail welcome, however dull — the duller the better, honestly.

The thing that made mine easy was doing it before the trip so that the whole holiday was clear. Simple, and I did not think of it for two years.

I found holidays hard for reasons that had nothing to do with logistics. Other people's meals, other people's schedules, and no routine at all.

Gently: nobody needs to justify the shape of their week here, including the members whose weeks have no shape at all.

My experience is that the practical side is solved and well documented and the social side is the part that still catches me out.

Aria has already said most of this and I want to add the one part that was different for me.

My prescriber wrote a two-line letter that has crossed nine borders and been read once. Still worth having.

Something practical: a photograph of everything, including the label, on my phone. Costs nothing and has been useful twice.

Reading and nodding. Nothing to add, and I wanted you to know somebody had read it.

Picking up Izolda’s point rather than starting a new one.

What I would flag is the return journey. I plan the outbound obsessively and had a difficult time on a delayed flight home.

Thirteen hours in the air and the whole thing came down to a cool bag and a printed letter, and both of those took ten minutes to arrange.

Duncan — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

Coming back from a three-week trip to say it was entirely uneventful, which is the outcome I wanted to read about before I went.

Never in the hold. That is the one thing everybody in this circle agrees on and it is worth repeating on every thread.

What I found is that other people's cooking on holiday was a bigger adjustment than any of the logistics.

Vera said something I want to sit with for a second.

Something practical: I take a small thermometer. It cost very little and it has settled several anxious afternoons.

I split everything across two bags in case one goes missing, and on one trip that turned out to be the reason nothing went wrong.

That is a very clear way of putting something I have never been able to put clearly.

What Ozren described happened to me too, in a slightly different order.

Time zones were the puzzle. I shifted mine gradually over the week before rather than trying to solve it on arrival.

I want to slow this down slightly. Every household described in a thread like this is real, and not one of those arrangements transfers whole to anybody else, which is why the detail matters more than the conclusion.

What I would say is get a letter from your prescriber. I have never needed it and I would not travel without it.
