A question rather than an update: My father asked whether it was safe and he was right to

Practical question, and possibly a silly one.

The thing I have not been able to find anywhere is how people manage this when the week has no fixed shape at all.

This is the boring administrative kind of problem, which I gather is the kind that actually gets solved when you ask.

My household has adjusted to about half of this and the other half is causing small daily friction that I have not known how to raise.

Thanks in advance. Practical detail welcome, however dull — the duller the better, honestly.

I found that other people's questions got much easier once I had one short prepared answer that I used every time.

The hardest conversation was about money, because this costs and we share a budget and I had been quietly not mentioning it.

Adding a marker so it does not get lost: the most practical sentence in a thread like this is almost never the first one, and somebody arriving late will scroll straight past it.

Building on what Wren wrote rather than answering the original question.

My children noticed before my partner did, which says something I am still thinking about.

My partner came to a family event with a prepared subject change and deployed it three times, and it was the kindest thing.

Reading Cormac, I recognised more of that than I expected to.

What I did not anticipate was how much better things got once I stopped managing everybody's feelings about it as well as my own.

Grateful you posted rather than kept it to yourself.

My experience is that families adjust more slowly than individuals and that the adjustment does eventually happen.

My mother cooks as an act of love and my appetite changing felt to her like a rejection, and naming that out loud helped both of us.

Gently disagreeing with Maple, or rather adding the other half of it.

What surprised me was that the person I expected to be difficult was supportive and the person I expected to be supportive was not.

Ozren — yes, and the bit that took me longest to accept was the next part.

We used to eat together in a particular way and that changed, and neither of us said anything about it for months.

What helped was one honest conversation where I said what I actually needed rather than expecting him to notice.

Thank you for asking the practical question. This circle is at its best on exactly this and the answers are already better than any guide I could write.

I asked him to stop commenting, once, clearly, and he did, and I had spent four months building up to a two-minute conversation.
